Afican Spiny Mouse

The African Spiny Mouse is not a mouse. It is actually closely related to a gerbil, so one could imagine it actually being a spiny gerbil. This organism is an interesting model system to study wound healing since its hair follicle density influences how wounds are repaired. The spines on this gerbil are actually "awl" hairs converted into larger hair types.
